MONT SAINT-MICHEL
Mont Saint-Michel is located on a rocky islet in the Gulf of St. Malo on the northwest coast of France. The entire islet is crowned by a Benedictine Abbey, which draws more than 3 million pilgrims and visitors a year. A small church was founded on that site in 708 after an appearance by the Archangel, Saint Michael. By the 11th century, the Romanesque abbey church and the first monastery buildings were built and through the years many changes took place. During the French Revolution the monks were ejected and the abbey became a prison. Then finally in 1872, the French Government took it over as a national monument and undertook the task of restoration. Since 1966, religious communities have once again inhabited the abbatial dwellings, thereby ensuring a spiritual presence at the abbey. |
